Why Every Great Video Starts with a Storyboard

the story is ALWAYS written before we hit record.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking the camera is where the creative process begins.

For us, it starts long before anyone presses record.

It starts with a storyboard.

A storyboard is simply a plan. It’s where we map out the story we want to tell, the shots we need, and how everything comes together before the day of filming.

Can you film without one? Absolutely.

But having a storyboard changes everything.

Instead of showing up and hoping you capture enough footage, you already know the vision. You know what moments matter most, what emotions you’re trying to create, and how each shot moves the story forward.

That also makes filming much more efficient. We spend less time wondering what to shoot next and more time focusing on getting the best possible footage.

A storyboard doesn’t have to be complicated, either.

Sometimes it’s just a list of scenes. Other times it’s rough sketches with notes beside them. The goal isn’t to create a work of art—it’s to create a clear direction for the production.

We’ve found that the better the planning, the better the final video.

Whether we’re filming a brand story, a community feature, a sports promo, or a behind-the-scenes video, we almost always start with a storyboard.

It helps everyone on the team stay on the same page, keeps the project organized, and gives us confidence when filming.

At the end of the day, a camera captures what’s in front of it.

A storyboard helps make sure what’s in front of the camera tells the right story.

That’s why, for us, every great video starts with a plan.
